What is Chan Meditation?Meditation is a journey through stillness that will restore your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. Along the way you will unfold your inherent wisdom, discover your inner sanctuary and develop a deep sense of peace.
Why Chan?Chan is a central practice of Mahayana Buddhism, which was transmitted to China from India, where it took root and subsequently spread throughout East Asia.
Our style of Mahayana Practice originates from the Orthodox Lineage that Great Master Xuan Hua brought to the United States from China in the 1960s. The Great Master’s meditation teachings are amongst the most profound of Mahayana, and are rooted in a more than 2,000-year-old tradition. As a patriarch of one of the main lineages of Buddhism, the Great Master knew meditation well. Basic Benefits of Chan MeditationAt the most basic level, the powerful techniques of Chan meditation will help you develop greater focus and concentration with an immediate and practical application to your life, enhancing your work and daily routines. As your concentration power grows with regular practice, you will become calm and centered. You will become healthier and function more effectively at whatever you put your mind to.
While meditation is not a substitute for medical care, it is extremely beneficial to your overall health. Medical studies have shown that meditation reduces stress, improves memory and lowers blood pressure. Here we have seen students of all ages reduce their chronic pain, increase their energy, and improve their circulation – all by practicing meditation. Meditation will also enable you to detach from afflictions such as grief, fear and anger, which will help you develop better relationships in all aspects of your life. Finally, meditation has also been proven to help treat depression and some mental illnesses. Advanced Benefits of Chan MeditationThe true purpose of meditation, for those who wish to deepen their practice, is to become enlightened. This is also known as seeing your True Nature.
The beginning stages of meditation will help you empty your mind and achieve concentration skills; if you progress with Chan practice, you will eventually learn deeper forms of meditation. The Chan Meditation methods will enable you to contemplate the Dharmas, or Buddhist teachings, and cultivate compassion and kindness, as well as unfold your wisdom. Ultimately, the understanding you develop will guide you to be of service to others on many levels. Our MissionOur mission is to serve and benefit the community by:
